Responsible gambling
Play money you can afford to lose
Every casino listed on this site keeps a mathematical edge, and a published return of 96 or 97 percent is a long run average, not a promise about your session. Treat a deposit the way you treat a cinema ticket: money spent on entertainment, gone once it is handed over. Gambling is restricted to adults aged 18 and over in New Zealand, and no operator on our list may accept an account holder under that age.
Set your limits before your first spin
Deposit caps, loss caps, session timers and reality checks are built into the account settings of all ten casinos we rank, and they take about two minutes to switch on. Set them when the account is new and calm rather than after a losing run. A daily deposit ceiling you choose yourself is far harder to argue with than a decision made at midnight. Cooling off periods of 24 hours to six weeks are available on request, and permanent self exclusion closes the account for good.
Signs worth taking seriously
Chasing losses with a bigger deposit, borrowing to fund a balance, playing to escape stress, hiding the size of a session from a partner, or missing work and sleep are the patterns that turn a hobby into a problem. Any one of them is a reason to stop and use the tools above.
Free help in New Zealand
The Gambling Helpline is free, confidential and open every hour of every day on 0800 654 655, with a text service on 8006 and a web chat. The Problem Gambling Foundation of New Zealand offers free face to face counselling nationwide, and Salvation Army Oasis runs services for gamblers and their families. Help is also available for partners, parents and friends, not only for the person placing the bets.
